Carbon 60 (C60) is known for its incredible health benefits due to its biochemical properties capable of neutralizing free radicals, allowing physiological functions to happen normally while reducing the risk for developing harmful processes. Composed by 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons, these are united by carbon atoms located in each edge, which are bound together by double bonds.

Interaction With Medication
With this in mind, the scope of this article is to explain the behavior of carbon 60 while interacting with medications. This can be viewed from the point of view of two of its main mechanisms: its antioxidant efficacy and its nano-carrier conduct.
According to some studies, due to its unique shape, C60 is described as a “free radical sponge” with an amazing antioxidant efficacy significantly higher than conventional antioxidants and powerful reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers (2, 3).
Carbon 60 possesses a large amount of conjugated double bonds and low lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), giving it the property of easily accepting electrons without being consumed. It has been reported that up to 34 methyl radicals have been added onto a single C60 molecule.
This allows this element to arrive at cell compartment sites where the development of free radicals takes place. This property is especially useful for those individuals who suffer from mitochondrial dysfunction and present biochemical problems regarding the functioning of the electron transport chain in which the production of energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) happens.
In the presence of C60, the damage produced by free radicals not only is taken care of, but it is also prevented, allowing organs and systems to function properly.
Pharmacologically speaking, this helps medication in its pharmacokinetic characteristics. It is not the same to administer a drug to a damaged body than to a healthy one. Having said this, from the antioxidant point of view, carbon 60 is capable of improving a medication´s absorption, distribution, metabolism, bioavailability, and excretion.

The other consideration regards its nano-carrier behavior, which has been revolutionizing the pharmaceutical field, especially in the nanotechnology section. The ability to trespass cellular barriers, such as the cellular membrane, blood-brain-barrier, endosomal membrane, and nuclear membrane.
The capacity to transport a great range of compounds inside them to practically any part of the body.
The wide availability shown due to its small size (~ 1 nm). The good biocompatibility and increased biological activity demonstrated.
The ability to react with other compounds and modify its properties.
The capacity to accomplish selective targeted delivery and controlled release of carried drugs.
Without a doubt, these properties are able to demonstrate that carbon 60 not only does not negatively interact with medication, but can in fact enhance the therapeutic efficacy of numerous pharmaceutical compounds, being of great use in cancer, neurological, orthopedic, and aesthetic treatments, among others. In addition, this element has been also used to improve the characteristics of imaging diagnostic methods.
Since C60 was only discovered at the end of the last century, many scientific details have yet to be studied and clarified. However, what has been discovered so far has been enough to form a new and exciting scientific field, opening its possibilities to an enormous number of applications that not only include health and pharmaceutics, but also fields regarding technology, environment, and energy. And it is its unique biochemical characteristics that put carbon 60 in a position where researchers unite their efforts to go further with their investigations and discover new and better field applications. Definitely, this fascinating element should not be feared, instead, it should be integrated into many aspects of the individuals´ daily life.
